The Council of the European Union has approved a ban on the registration of petrol and diesel cars, passed earlier by Parliament. The ban is to apply throughout the European Union after 2035. An exception to the ban – negotiated by the Germans – is made for cars powered by ecological fuels.
It is worth noting that the ban only applies to the registration of new cars; those registered earlier will be able to remain on the market. Nevertheless, the regulation is highly controversial due to the speed of the changes and the lack of a sufficiently developed electric car sector.
