THE LEGEND OF BAYRAKTARS – DRONES IN THE UKRAINIAN ARMY AND THEIR PROBLEMS

Today, drones have become an integral part of warfare, often playing a key role in armed conflicts. Since the outbreak of full-scale war in Ukraine, both sides – both the Ukrainian and Russian armies – have been using different types of UAVs. In the service of the army, drones perform all sorts of functions: they prove themselves in intelligence and reconnaissance activities, but also as offensive weapons.

The most famous drone model, and at the same time a symbol of Ukrainian resistance in the war against Russia, has become the Bayraktar TB2. This Turkish-designed drone proved to be a sensation in the early stages of the conflict, thanks to its extraordinary efficiency and ability to fly over enemy positions without risking the loss of its crew. The machines measure approximately 6.5m in length and have a 12m span. Their armament consists of laser-guided MAM-L and MAM-C bombs, whose devastating performance has been documented in footage shared in large numbers by Ukrainian soldiers in social media spaces.

Despite the excellent performance of the Bayraktars in the first months of the war, they are now no longer widely used as assault drones. In the ongoing Ukrainian offensive in Russia since August, these unmanned aerial vehicles mainly perform reconnaissance and intelligence functions. The reason for this is the development of Russia’s radio-electronic warfare and integrated air defence systems – the Bayraktar TB2, as a vessel of large size and limited speed, has become an easy target for enemy defence systems. This is not to say that the Bayraktar’s mission in Ukraine has been aborted, but the numerous drone losses sustained by the Ukrainian army have forced the combatants to reassign the drone, while shattering the legend that the Turkish drone was surrounded by.

The website is operated as part of the programme of the Polish Ministry of Education and Science – Social Responsibility of Science.

The project is carried out by Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw.

Project name: Law of new technologies – drones, electromobility. Innovation, development, security.

The state-funded project was accepted for funding in the context of a competition launched by the Minister of Education and Science on 8 March 2021 as part of the “Social Responsibility of Science” programme.

Value of aid: PLN 235,087,00. Total cost of the project: PLN 265.087,00

The aim of the project is to promote scientific research in the field of the law of new technologies by disseminating knowledge of the legislation on unmanned aerial vehicles – drones – in particular their operation, design, the obligations of operators and pilots, the obligations of public actors in the field of electromobility and the support mechanisms for users.
